Practical mountain advice

How to choose the right hiking level

Distance alone does not determine difficulty. Ascent, terrain, duration, altitude and your recent experience all need to be considered.

Look beyond the kilometres

A short hike can be demanding when the slope is steep or the terrain uneven. Compare both distance and ascent.

Use your recent experience

Think about walks you completed comfortably, not your best performance several years ago.

Choose for the whole party

The route should suit the least experienced person, particularly when children are taking part.
